Connecting Trinidad & Tobago with Surinam, via Guyana

PARTNERSHIPGlobal Marine Systems & Huawei Marine Networks
Project description:
- Linking Trinidad with Suriname and Guyana.
- Nexans delivered a fiber optic cable of a total length of 1300 km.
- The aim of the cable system was to enhance communication links between the three countries, and give them a reliable broadband connection to the rest of the world.
Customer’s challenge:
- To procure a cost-effective fiber optic cable for the project.
Nexans’ solutions:
- A Repeatered Optical Cable from Nexans made this project possible. Huge volumes of data can circulate the whole globe in a single fiber no thicker than a human hair. Between each country, only two fibers are required, the cable is connected to a T-shaped branching-unit at a depth of 2000 meters, and this distributes the fibers between the countries. In total, only four modern optical fibers are required in the cable.
- The cable is immersed in a trench in the shallow areas, and the fibers are protected by a steel tube, rubberpolyetylene, asphalt/bitumen and steel armour. As the depth increases, the amount of protection is reduced, and on the abyssal plains at 2000 meters downdepth, it is laid directly on the seabed and is just 18 mm thick.
- The cables are produced in segment lengths of 70-80 km, and then connected with amplifiers.
“ The latest repeatered optical cable is a major technological breakthrough for Nexans that will enable us to deliver cables for any optical transmission range. It opens up tremendous opportunities for us in this new and very interesting market segment. ”
