Benefits
The excellent mechanical properties of Al alloy 6201 used in conductors allow optimized characteristics for transmission and distribution line projects which require suitable mechanical strength and electrical conductivity. It is a very convenient for transmission and distribution overhead lines , which must be carefully evaluated in order to achieve the following benefits:
- Higher project versatility
- Good corrosion resistance
- High tensile strength/weight
- More simple acessories
- High strength to creep
- Less losses
All benefits mentioned above contribute to reduce costs in a project.
Chemical Composition
Basically, the material is an Alloy with Magnesium/Silicon-added providing approximately twice of mechanical strength, compared to Al 1350, used in ACSR cables.
Resistance to corrosion
Its major difference in respect to other alternative alloys is the thermal treatment method, solubilization before drawing, which provides to material a significant increase of resistance to corrosion.
Surface hardness
The higher surface hardness of the Al Alloy 6201, twice as much as Al 1350, gives to conductors a higher resistance to abrasion when compared to others alloys.
Conductivity and magnetic losses
The conductivity of Al 6201-Alloy is lower than Al 1350, with approximately 52.5% of IACS. This disadvantage can be reverted when comparing the whole conductor. Because the Al 6201-Alloy conductors do not require steel core they can be 25% lighter, enabling the use of the same sags of ACSR, but with a lower tension string, thus resulting in a less creep along the years.
